IDEAS for Us: How to Save the Planet, One Idea at a Time

This past July climate scientists at the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the AMS (American Meteorological Society) linked, for the very first time, recent extreme weather events to human-induced climate change in their State of the Climate Report.

Out of the six extreme weather events in 2011, including Japan’s combination earthquake and tsunami, flooding in Thailand and Brazil, drought and tornado outbreaks in the U.S., and Europe’s heat wave, the report signifies that five of them can be at least partially attributed to climate change. Deputy NOAA Administrator Kathryn D. Sullivan states with forewarning that: “this annual report provides scientists and citizens alike with an analysis of what has happened so we can all prepare for what is to come.” (Source: NOAA News)

In the coming decades these extreme conditions can potentially lead to devastating effects on our water supplies, agriculture, power and transportation systems, the earth’s natural environment, and the health and safety of humanity. (Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
